The Coffee Hunt: Big Dog Coffee

As previously stated:

…I figured I would set out to try every espresso in The City (and some in the South Hills burbs)… if you want to find the perfect coffee, you have to put in the legwork. In the interest of simplicity, here’s how it’s gonna go down: single shot espresso, rating from 1-10 based solely on that shot. No further justification. Just because.

In the South Side of Pittsburgh, on the mostly-residential Sarah St. is Big Dog Coffee. (Be warned that their Web site commits one of the cardinal sins against good design: it plays music automatically upon page load. No one likes this.) It’s a parlor-esque place and I was immediate struck by the friendliness of the two baristas. They serve Intelligencia Black Cat which make a tasty shot.

TEEN @ Club Cafe 2/18/16

TEEN‘s new release “Love Yes” is out February 19th and they are in Pittsburgh at Club Cafe the day before that in support. Worth checking out.

Tickets here.

Julien Baker / Cold Weather @ Club Cafe 1/19/15

I don’t know much about Julien, but I have several Pittsburgh friends who are deep into the American singer/songwriter scene and I kind of happened onto her that way. Her songs are super nice and she definitely has some kind of vocal power that sucks you in and makes you stay for a while. Looking forward to seeing her live for the first time.

I know a little more about Cold Weather. I met Mark at a party not long after arriving in Pittsburgh, and after our first conversation I quickly realized that we had a lot in common and he was someone I wanted to talk to more. Cold Weather’s debut full-length is so cohesive and visual– I was instantly a fan. Are you a Heatmiser or Elliot Smith fan? Then you might dig this too.

Here’s the Facebook event page.

The Coffee Hunt: Le Petit Chocolat and Cafe

Today I’m at Le Petit Chocolat and Cafe in the South Side. This place is not at all my typical haunt, but I was with my daughter who was lured in by the cupcakes, so I gave the coffee a try. Not too bad for a place where coffee is not their primary focus!

The Coffee Hunt: Delanie’s Coffee

My home city is new to me, but my coffee habit is long in the tooth. I figured I would set out to try every espresso in The City (and some in the South Hills burbs)… if you want to find the perfect coffee, you have to put in the legwork. In the interest of simplicity, here’s how it’s gonna go down: single shot espresso, rating from 1-10 based solely on that shot. No further justification. Just because.

I happen to be in The South Side this morning, so I’ll start with Delanie’s Coffee.

Silver Eye Center for Photography, thank you for existing!

This past July, I moved from Brooklyn– with it’s hyper-saturated art scene– to a much smaller Pittsburgh. I lived in NYC for almost 20 years, and even though I was quite spoiled by the volume of fine art culture there, I somehow knew things would be happening in Pittsburgh, too. Slowly but surely, I am learning that an art scene *is* here… it might just take me a little time to piece together the map of its parts.

This past weekend, I made my first trip t0 Silver Eye Center for Photography in the South Side for their (3rd) annual book fair. If you haven’t been to this event, it’s kind of like the NY Art Book Fair or the LA Art Book Fair, only at a teeny fraction of the size. But while the market for fine art books in Pittsburgh might be smaller than the aforementioned Coasts, the quality of work inside Silver Eye’s walls was very high.

One of my favorite exhibitors was Minneapolis-based Mystery Spot Books. I picked up “Scanned Land” by Chad Rutter, and I would suggest that you do too… it’s only $5!

SCANNED LAND

Artist: Chad Rutter

Scanned Land is a project that uses an HP flatbed scanner as a tool for exploring the physical attributes of sites and their larger land features.

Edition size: 250, Offset Printing, 12 Pages | $5

Terror / Code Orange / Take Offense / King Nine / Malfunction @ Altar Bar, 11/30/15

A pretty solid bill all around, but the standout for me was Code Orange— devastatingly powerful and impossible to stop watching on stage. Their latest release “I Am King” is really good, especially when it ventures into the industrial corners of post-hardcore. I’ll be seeing these guys every chance I get.
